There has been at least some discussion about taking the WWE Title off CM Punk at SummerSlam and then doing The Rock vs. John Cena at the Royal Rumble followed by Rock vs. Punk at WrestleMania 29.
To us, this story isn’t too far-fetched. Especially considering Punk has been WWE champion since Nov. 2011. And during that time, the WWE has witnessed several solid pay-per-view matches and story lines featuring John Cena. Then add on the fact that The Rock has been very verbal about gunning for the WWE title.
Not to mention, The Rock vs. John Cena match at WrestleMania 28 helped garner the WWE’s best ‘Mania buy-rates in the history of the event.
Ultimately, it appears that the WWE had just enough faith in Punk to make him champ, but not enough to push Cena into the foreground. I personally feel Cena has done a solid job at staying relevant without needing to hold the title. Let’s face it, as much as people want to compare Cena to Hulk Hogan, Cena at least was willing to step back and let others have their time in the spotlight.
