WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Results will be updated here on Jan.27, 2017.

It’s almost time. The new year has begun. It’s January. That means we’re on course for WWE Royal Rumble 2017! A handful of matches will happen, only to be overshadowed by the best gimmick match WWE has to offer! It’s the show that takes the edge off being done with the holidays.

This will be the 30th edition of Royal Rumble 2017, which is fitting. The first Royal Rumble was a televised cable event in 1988, featuring a 20-man over-the-top-rope Rumble. It became a PPV with a 30-man match the year after. In 1992, the match was for the vacated WWF Championship. After that, it became a match for a guaranteed WrestleMania title shot. That is, except for 2016, where the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was on the line.

While it’s arguably the PPV to look forward the most each year, it’s also known as the first stop on the Road to WrestleMania.

The show will take place on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

This is notable for housing the 1997 Royal Rumble, won by Steve Austin. Also worth mentioning is that the Saturday before will give us NXT TakeOver: San Antonio.

Winner Becomes #1 Contender for WWE World Championship or WWE Universal Championship

Bill Goldberg,
Brock Lesnar

The namesake and selling point of the PPV comes in the form of a 30-man battle royal where every entrant is a random draw. Every minute and a half or so, a new person enters and they can only be eliminated via going over the top rope. Former winners include Steve Austin, John Cena, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Ric Flair, Undertaker, Batista, he-who-shall-not-be-named-due-to-racism, and he-who-shall-not-be-named-due-to-murder.

As it is right now, the big story is that Goldberg and Lesnar will be involved. At Survivor Series, Goldberg made a return match against Lesnar and to everyone’s surprise, he destroyed him within a minute and a half. Goldberg then decided that he wanted to try for one more title reign and entered himself into the match. In response, an emotional Paul Heyman claimed that Lesnar would enter as well to get revenge on that Survivor Series massacre.

Now that we’re back to having two main titles, we’re easily going to have the title defenses. AJ Styles will surely defend the WWE World Championship and whoever is WWE Universal Champion will defend it as well.

Perhaps we’ll see AJ Styles vs. Undertaker? We’ve certainly had enough of seeing Styles take on Dean Ambrose.

A Surprise Winner

THE fans turned on WWE at Royal Rumbles 2014 and 2015 – won by Batista and Roman Reigns respectively – for a simple reason: they could see the winner coming a mile off.

It smacked of lazy, self-aggrandizing booking and the fans unsurprisingly rejected it.

This doesn’t mean chose a random winner who’s not over enough or doesn’t have the momentum to contend for a main title (Alberto Del Rio and Sheamus in 2011 and 2012) but to put some thought into the build, making it an open playing field between a number of potential winners.

Or even someone who we didn’t even know was entering…

A Finn Bálor Return

Finn Balor wwe raw debut

WHAT a surprise it would be if Bálor was medically cleared in time for the Rumble.

A surprise “Demon” entrance would be an instantly classic moment and – after winning the Universal Championship at SummerSlam, only to vacate it through injury the next night – the story of the underdog returning to claim what’s his tells itself.

Assuming Kevin Owens retains the title until WrestleMania, a title match between would be electric.

Another Shield Reunion

WWE The Shield

WE actually saw it happen first at Survivor Series – when Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose joined forced to drive AJ Styles through an announce table.

And Royal Rumble will mark the first time since that all three men will be on the same card.

The Rumble could see the three team up once again – another tease and step towards the trio’s inevitable second run together.
